If the units are sound but the worktops are chipped, swollen at the sink, or simply dated, replacing the worktops alone transforms the room for a fraction of a full kitchen.

Worth knowing
A worktop swap usually takes a day or two rather than a fortnight, and you keep the use of your kitchen for most of it. It is also the point at which a lot of people discover their units are in better shape than they thought.
