A period property where the original wall had no insulation and was prone to damp.
Fitting straight onto a wall like that is asking for trouble: the cold surface attracts condensation, and damp gets into the back of the units and the worktop edges within a couple of winters. So before the kitchen went in we built a timber-framed wall inside the old one, and fitted everything to that.
It adds time and it is not the glamorous part of the job, but it is the part that means the kitchen still looks right in ten years.
